Turtle Prayer

Great Turtle Spirit,
I invite you into my life.
I seek your lessons of tremendous patience.
I seek your lessons of stability.
I seek your lessons of the shore.
Lead me along that place
where water touches Earth,
the space between movement and stillness.
Remind me that I carry all I need
with me at all times.
Awaken my senses
so that I am prepared for
opportunities as they arrive.
Help me trust that all happens
when and how it should.
Shield me from harm, and share your primal wisdom.
Please,
help me remember that my home is with me
wherever I go.
Mother Turtle,
I call to you.

Blessing for Spring Equinox

Lord of the springtime, Father of flower, field and fruit, smile on us in these earnest days when the work is heavy and the toil wearisome; lift up our hearts, O God, to the things worthwhile — sunshine and night, the dripping rain, the song of the birds, books and music, the voices of our friends. Lift up our hearts to these this night and grant us Thy peace. Amen.

Watering the Tiny Seed

How shall the mighty river
reach the tiny seed?
See it rise silently
to the sun’s yearning;
sail from a winter’s cloud
flake after silent flake
piling up layer upon layer
until the thaw of spring
to meet the seedling’s need.

Make tender, Lord, my heart:
release through gentleness
Thine own tremendous power
hid in the snowflake’s art.

Welcoming Winter Solstice

“It is our quiet time.
We do not speak, because the voices
are within us.
It is our quiet time.
We do not walk, because the earth is all within us.
It is our quiet time.
We do not dance, because the music has lifted us to a place where the spirit is.
It is our quiet time.
We rest with all of nature. We wake when the seven sisters wake.

We greet them in the sky over the opening of the kiva.”

From Fire to Nature

I will forever be grateful for what I learned from my dear teacher and friend, Sobonfu Somé. She spent her entire adult life traveling throughout the world sharing the powerful teachings of ritual and spiritual wisdom from her village in Burkina Faso, West Africa. One of the many things she taught me is about the 5 elements that the Dagara people of her homeland honor and seek to have in balance in all aspects of their lives. The last digit of a year is what indicates the element for that year. Your year of birth indicates what your primary element would be in this tradition: Continue reading “From Fire to Nature”
