October 17, 2009: newest paintings

Lots happening these days, so "news" has been neglected for a couple of months. I have just posted a 2nd round of photos to the gallery pages of MarthaKMoore.com. She has sold a number of pieces this year and has created quite a beautiful collection of work.

To help showcase the amazing paintings my mother is creating, I designed and built a website for her. Check it out: MarthaKMoore.com.

April 6, 2009: I get it honestly ...

My mom, Martha Moore, is an exceptionall talented self-taught oil and watercolor artist. Her speciality is creating pieces with tremendous detail. Now that she is retired from teaching, she has truly begun to expand her body of work and have fun with a whole variety of pieces she is creating. To see more examples of her work check out Buffalo Creek Gallery in Shelby, NC where she currently has work for show and sale.

March 31, 2009: My first marathon

On March 21 I ran my very first marathon, the National, in DC. I trained for this event with my husband, Brian Fillman, and it was an amazing experience! A part of me finds it hard to believe that I actually ran 26.2 miles in one shot. But I did it! My next big run will be a 50K ultra trail marathon on May 9.

February 17, 2009: "Vienna Red"

I have finished two new pieces this month, both using a new paint I purchased from one of my favorite online resources, Dick Blick. I was intrigued by the name, "Vienna Red" which is an earthy red tone that has a deeply comforting feel to me. I'm also using deeper canvases, which have such a regal presentation on a wall, even without a frame.

January 8, 2009: Reflection

iris photo

"Iris Out of Season" 2008, Cynthia JM Fillman

I watched the movie "Akeelah and the Bee" in 2006 and remember Laurence Fishburne's character speaking from a very moving piece of text that was originally written by Marianne Williamson in her book,
"A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles."

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.”

I recently met and befriended Jenni Kreer, owner of The Body Gallery, with locations in both Sterling and Leesburg, VA. Jenni and crew are really talented tattoo artists offering tattoos of all kinds, piercing and even laser removal and tattoo modification/cover-up. They also have some fantastic artwork showcased on the walls of both studios, and Jenni is now featuring some of my paintings for show and sale.

Check them out at TheBodyGallery.net or better yet, stop by and say hello ... it is a really fun and creative atmosphere!

October 30, 2008: Wedding Gift

A friend of mine married recently, and instead of the usual registry gift, I was inspired to paint for her and her new husband.

October 15, 2008: Arkansas Adventure

hot springs AR

Sunrise at Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas

Just returned from a 10 day vacation to Hot Springs, Arkansas, located in the Diamond Lakes Region of the scenic Ouachita Mountains. Many of my friends have asked incredulously, "Why did you go to Arkansas??" The initial inspiration was our friend Phil Holt, who invited us to crew for him for the Arkansas Traveler 100 mile ultra marathon. And the vacation kind of built itself around that. We hiked, took in the Hot Springs spa experience downtown, and enjoyed some fantastic food at Doe's on Lake Hamilton. I found it especially fascinating to learn that Native Americans have long considered the Hot Springs area to be a place of peace and healing, an area where even warring tribes would lay down their weaponry and gather together putting all conflict aside.

September 23, 2008: Overhauled Website

Earlier this month I finally finished updating this site to be a better representation of my design and artwork. Have a thought on how this site looks and feels to you? Email me at Cynthia@IDbyCynthia.com ... I'd love to hear your feedback!

August 25, 2008: More texture

I've been thinking about working with broken glass for some time, but had avoided it initially because I wasn't sure how to avoid the sliced-finger-factor. Finally decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a shot. This resulting piece is called "Shattering Misconceptions" and measures 31.5 x 14.5 inches.

July 21, 2008: Texture, texture, texture

I find myself more and more drawn to creating pieces with texture. I enjoy making art that wants to be touched. Guess that is where the "wall sculpture" descriptor comes in handy as an accurate term for what I enjoy making. Here's a photo of my newest piece, "Convergence." Is is a 30 x 30" acrylic on canvas that is both wrapped and accentuated with wire. I plan to submit this piece to the 2008 "Something Hot" exhibit at Gallery 222 here in Leesburg, VA.

July 15, 2008: Finally ... I'm in Elan magazine!

July 1, 2008: Name Change

I got married recently and have begun the oh-so-enjoyable process of changing my name from Cynthia M Cardimon to Cynthia JM Fillman. Below is a photo of me and my beloved:

The headpiece I am wearing was commissioned for me as a gift from my fantastic sister. The artist who created this amazing piece (which can also be worn as a necklace) is Joanne Titolo. To see samples of some of her other special projects, plus a wonderful photo of this piece up close, check out Joanne's special project page in her website, TerraLunaStudio.net.

June 16, 2008: DC Gay Pride Festival

Yesterday I participated in my very first gay pride festival in downtown Washington, DC. It was an amazing event! The group that organized the festival made my vendor experience extremely smooth and manageable. So I took a cross-section of the different kinds of painting and wall sculpture I create. I shared my information and skills in hopes of creating some potential for future commissioned projects. It was a fabulous day and I look forward to participating in this festival next year, too. The photo below if of me and my best friend Mark in front of my display. Behind us on the right is "Evolving," and to the left are two of my newest pieces: "Over the Waterfall" top, and "Tidal Pool" below. Of the pieces I displayed, "Evolving" and "Over the Waterfall" seems to attract the most attention. And I do believe, in looking at this photo, that I've got more gray hair than Mark! Oh the horror ...

May 21, 2008: The Rivers Flow

I completed and shipped my most recent commissioned piece, "The Rivers Flow." I created this painting for a space on a dining room wall for a family in North Carolina. They emailed me a photo and dimensional measurements of the space, as well as a description of the colors of their china. The result is below:

April 30, 2008: Naked Studio

I have suddenly found myself in the delightful position of having many of my paintings now on display for show and sale in several locations across Loudoun County. Dr. Deidre Kokel's dentistry office located at 17 Ft. Evans Rd., Leesburg, VA, has 9 of my "smaller" pieces hanging in the patient exam rooms. Telos Corporation located at 19886 Ashburn Road, Ashburn, VA is now showcasing two of my larger pieces, "Amazing Grace," and "Violet Transformation." Additionally, today I hung two new pieces at O'Haira's Salon and Day Spa in Sterling, VA, "Sky Vision I" and "Sky Vision II." So my studio space is now hungry for new creations.

I am also waiting for final spec details on a commissioned painting that I have been hired to create for a residential dining area. It is thrilling to be making artwork for new spaces and clients!

February 29, 2008: New Display at O'Haira's

Today I installed my newest completed painting, "Evolving." It is a large assembled piece that I painted with a palette knife and very thick layers of acrylic. It was a long and involved process creating this piece, but I very much enjoyed the experience. The name "Evolving" represents both the circular movement of the piece as well as the process of creating it. I painted many layers, allowing each layer to fully dry before adding more. Much like life, the timing of this creation was an exercise in patience, as it could not be rushed. "Evolving" illustrates many aspects of my own life experiences recently. It will be on display at O'Haira's until mid-April and is available for sale for $675.

July 21, 2007: XinDC Design Competition

Above, I'm caught in the photographic moment of hard-core concentration ... a little scary!

What is X? A gathering of artists for inspiring creativity and experience. Musicians, visual artists, digital artists, tribal dancers and more ... truly an evening to experience for yourself.

In a nutshell, 3 digital artists have 4 hours to create the poster for next month's X party. Our work is projected onto the wall for all to see while we create. The kicker is we have three words we are given at the beginning of the evening which we must incorporate in some way into the design. Our words on July 21 were:

Spectacle, Hype & Cacophony

My resulting design came across heavy with that urban, grunge feel:
